JULIA WARD HOWE
She signs a handwritten letter explaining that demand for autograph copies of
her Battle Hymn exceed her ability to supply them.
Autograph Letter signed: "Julia Ward Howe", 2 pages, 4½x7. Boston,
Massachusetts, 1896 January 9. In full: "I am sorry indeed, dear Miss
Wendell, that I cannot fulfill your wish regarding an autograph copy of my
Battle Hymn. The requests sent me for such copies are already beyond my ability.
I will send you instead a copy of the Hymn which was printed for me by my
official Club, the N. E. Women's, on the occasion of my seventieth birthday. I
rejoice to hear of the thriving condition of your chapter, and hope that you
will soon be happily at home in the Women's Club Building. Cordially yours."
JULIA WARD HOWE (1819-1910) was a social reformer and poet who wrote the
words to one of the nation's most stirring songs: "The Battle Hymn of the
Republic". Howe later turned her fervor against slavery into a crusade
for women's rights. She was the first President of the New England Woman's
Suffrage Association and founded the Women's International Peace Association in
1871. She founded the Boston Authors Club. Lightly soiled. Otherwise,
fine condition.
