a patriotic epigram
Autograph Quotation Signed: "Julia Ward Howe", 1 page, 5¼x4.
No place, 1896 May. In full: "Love your Country. You can build up for
her one faithful son and servant. Remember that one good patriot may help to
make many." In 1861, during the Civil War, Julia Ward Howe was inspired to
write "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" after visiting army camps in Washington,
D.C. Her poem was first published in the February 1862 issue of "The Atlantic
Monthly". The words were sung to the melody of the popular antislavery tune,
"John Brown's Body". Light vertical fold through the "r". Remnants from previous
mounting slightly show through, touching 2 words. Overall, fine condition.
Framed in the Gallery of History style: 28½x18.
