JULIAN BOND
The First Day Cover honoring Haym Solomon as part of Spirit of 76 series is signed by the American social activist and leader in the Civil Rights Movement, signed in black ink
First Day Cover Signed: "Julian/Bond", 6½x3½. First Day Cover honoring Haym Salomon. Postmarked Chicago, Illinois, March 25, 1975. 10-cent stamp affixed. FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. In February 1998, Julian Bond (1940-2015) was elected Chairman of the NAACP, a 500,000-member group that was founded in 1909. Prominent in Civil Rights protests in the 1960s, Bond led a sit-in movement to desegregate Atlanta's lunch counters before turning to a career in politics. In 1965, he won a seat in Georgia's state legislature, but the body refused to seat him, citing his statement accusing the U.S. of violating international law in Vietnam. In December 1966, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the exclusion unconstitutional, and Bond was sworn in on January 9, 1997. Bond, who served in the Georgia House of Representatives (1967-1975) and Georgia Senate (1975-1987), became the first Black man to have his name placed in nomination for the vice presidency of a major political party in 1968; he withdrew his name as he was under the Constitutional minimum age. Fine condition.
