Postcard Photograph signed: "Bonheur/Greco" [French sentiment = "happiness"]. B/w, 3½x5½. French singer and actress Juliette Greco (b. 1927) was active in the Resistance as a teen-ager. After the war she moved to Paris, becoming a favorite of avant-garde intellectuals like Jean-Paul Sartre and Jean Cocteau, and American jazz musician Miles Davis. Cocteau put her in her first film, his Orpheus (1950). That same year she released the first of 27 albums to date. Her penultimate album, Je Me Souviens de Tout ("I Remember Everything") was accompanied by a series of concert performances in 2009. She appeared in several English-language films of the late 1950s and early sixties, including The Sun Also Rises and The Roots of Heaven. In France, she is closely associated with the character of Belphegor ("phantom of the Louvre"), which she first played in a TV mini-series of 1965. Corners and edges lightly worn.
