JULIETTE KOKA
Actress sends John Willis, editor of Theatre World, new information, asks to catch up at a later date
Autograph letter signed: "Juliette" in blue ink. 2 pages, 5x6¼. Written on personal letterhead. February 6, 1982. In full: "John darling, Here is the picture material + material about the theater for you to use anyway you think. May I thank you again, and again for being so generous to me in all your books. But again, you are a real sweet person. Please call me after your busy season is over so we can have lunch or something!! Would love to see you Monday Feb 8th if you can. With much love". Juliette Koka (1930-2011) was an actress and singer, known for her admiration of and performances as Edith Piaf. She landed the role of Piaf on Broadway after producers saw her one woman show dedicated to the singer and decided to bring her to Broadway. The show had mixed reviews, and ended after one month. Although she had other performances and minor roles, Koka continued to sing Piaf's songs for benefits and local venues. Sadly, she passed away in 2011. John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which received its own Tony for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Slightly toned. Corners rounded. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
