JULIUS AXELROD
The Nobel Prize winner (Physiology or Medicine, 1970) signs a First Day Cover
advocating help for retarded children.
First Day Cover signed: "Julius Axelrod", 6½x3½. FDC honoring Retarded
Children Can Be Helped, 10-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Arlington, Texas,
October 12, 1974, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. The neuropharmacologist shared the 1970
Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with biophysicists Bernard Katz and Ulf
von Euler for his work on neurotransmitters (the chemical messengers of the
brain). Axelrod wanted to know why the messengers, once transmitted, should
stop operating. Through his studies he found a number of specific enzymes that
rapidly degraded the neurotransmitters. Fine condition.
