Four measures of music signed "for kind remembrance!" in translated German by composer Julius Bittner in Berlin in 1907
Autograph musical quotation signed in German, translated "Berlin at 5 December 1907/Julius Bittner/for kind remembrance!" 1 page, 8¼x6½. With four measures of music. Austrian composer Bittner (1874-1939) was one of Austria's most performed opera composers before World War II. He was largely a self-taught musician, having pursued a legal rather than musical education. His operas, which included The Red Greed (1907), The Musician (1909), The Mountain Lake (1911), The Rose Garden (1923) and The Violets (1934), as well as his most successful work The Infernal Gold (1916), were nationalist fantasies based on fairy tales and often with self-written librettos; they hewed closely to the Romantic traditions of Richard Wagner. Bittner also wrote two string quartets, a mass titled the Missa Austriaca, symphonic poems and incidental music for plays by Shakespeare, Johann Nestroy and Ferdinand Raimund. Lightly creased. Irregular top edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
