JULIUS STERLING MORTON
Morton signed this typed letter to Milton Doolittle on letterhead from the United States Department of Agriculture in 1895. In it, he discusses a recent resignation in the Post Office.
Typed letter signed "J Sterling Morton". 1 page, 7¾x9¾, on letterhead from the Office of the Secretary of the United Stated Department of Agriculture. Jan. 28, 1895. Addressed to Milton Doolittle, Esq., Bank Receiver, North Platte, Nebraska. In full: "My dear Mr. Doolittle: I received your communication, dated at Atkinson on January 21, this morning, and hasten to state that Mr. Doyle's fears are ungrounded. The resignation he speaks of was taken over to the Postmaster General at the time I received it. Everything that I can do to bring about the appointments which you desire, is being done. The paper read before the State Historical Society, on 'A Few Facts in Finance', will be 'get-at-able' in the North American Review for February, 1895. Trusting that you may find your position as Receiver for the Bank agreeable, and that you may reflect great credit upon your immediate friends, your Party, and the Treasury Department by efficient, honest, and satisfactory discharge of your duties, I remain, Very faithfully yours,". Morton (1832-1902, born in Adams, New York) was Secretary of Nebraska Territory (1858-1861) and served as President Grover Cleveland's Secretary of Agriculture in his second term (1893-1897). Morton also founded Arbor Day. Lightly toned and creased. Light dents in left edge. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
