Morton signed this typed letter to Milton Doolittle on letterhead from the United States Department of Agriculture in 1895. In it, he says he will send all the complaints he has against a Mr. Morse to Doolittle. Accompanied by original mailing envelope.
Typed letter signed "J Sterling Morton". 1 page, 7¾x9¾, on letterhead from the Office of the Secretary of the United Stated Department of Agriculture. April 15, 1895. Addressed to Milton Doolittle, Esq., North Platte, Nebraska. In full: "Dear Sir: I hasten to acknowledge yours of the 10th, and to inform you that some time, when I have more leisure, I will be pleased to have all of the affidavits, letters, declarations and statements against Mr. Morse taken from my personal files and sent directly to you for your further enlightenment and delectation. Be not at all worried as to the impression which the critics of Mr. Morse may have made upon me. Hoping that you are soon going to declare a dividend,and that you may so discharge your duties as Receiver of the Bank as to merit the commendation of all your friends, the public generally, and the depositors in that Bank particularly, I remain, Very respectfully yours,". Lightlytoned and creased. Light dents in left edge. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: Original mailing envelope from the Office of the Secretary of the United Stated Department of Agriculture. Postmarked Washington, DC, July 30, 1895. Addressed to Milton Doolittle, Receiver, North Platte, Nebraska. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. With one red-and-white 2¢ stamp affixed. Right edge is torn open. Morton (1832-1902, born in Adams, New York) was Secretary of Nebraska Territory (1858-1861) and served as President Grover Cleveland's Secretary of Agriculture in his second term (1893-1897). Morton also founded Arbor Day.
