photo of him in costume in Il Trovatore
Signature: "Jussi Björling" in blue ink. 4x3¾. With 2¼x3¼ b/w
magazine photo affixed. Tenor Björling (1911-1960, born John Jonaton
Björling in Stora Tuna, Sweden) made his operatic debut with the Royal
Theater in Stockholm in 1930 and sang with European companies, including the
Vienna State Opera and the Dresden State Opera, before making his
U.S. debut in concert at Carnegie Hall in 1937. The following year, he
made his debut with New York's Metropolitan Opera. From 1945 to 1960,
Björling, who specialized in French and Italian opera, sang nearly every
role. On March 15, 1960, he suffered a heart attack before a performance at
London's Covent Garden. He went on stage that night, but died six months
later in Sweden. Lightly toned and creased. Paper loss touches signature, which
is still legible. Adhesive residue on photo. Irregular edges. Random ink marks.
Missing bottom left corner. Otherwise in fine condition.
