JUSTIN McCARTHY
After returning home from a vacation in Monte Carlo, he writes author Walter Herries Pollock to compliment his most recent novel.
Autograph letter signed: "Justin Huntley McCarthy", 4 pages, 4½x7. Westgate on Sea, Kent, England, 18 March 1903. To "My dear Walter Pollock" English writer and journalist, In full: "While I was in Monte Carlo your book came to me and gave me some delightful hours. I did not send you my thanks then, for one of the conditions of my holiday was 'no writing' but I resolved that my first business & pleasure on my return would be the expression of my gratitude for some new & dear friends in the world of animals. But thinking I have now been back some days this is the first time I have been free to write. On my return I found my sister severely ill & she has been ill ever since. She is better now but we are still very anxious. Under these conditions you will understand why I did not write. One again my warm thanks, & with kindest regards to Mrs. Pollock believe me. Always sincerely" Justin McCarthy (1830-1912), an Irish politician who advocated Home Rule as a Member of the British Parliament (1879-1900), was also a prolific journalist, novelist and historian. His most known works include A Fair Saxon (1873), Dear Lady Disdain (1875) and Miss Misanthrope (1878). He also co-authored three books with Rosa Campbell Praed, including their 1886 novel The Right Honourable. Walter Herries Polloc (1850-1926) was an Englsih writer, poet and journalist, who edited the Saturday Review from 1884 to 1894. Important to literary criticism, he is the author of Jane Austen: Her Contemporaries and Herself (1899). Normal mailing folds. Creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
