JUSTIN McCARTHY
The Irish author's handwritten letter from 1901 thanking a friend for gifts.
Autograph letter signed: "Justin McCarthy", 1 page, 4½x7. Westgate on Sea, Kent, England, 21 April 1901. To "My Dear Lady White" in full: "You are so kind--and you know some of my weakness! I am a sincere lover of plovers' eggs--by the way--'love' rhymes with 'plove' but we can't well bring the eggs into verse, and so I shall have them brought into me after dinner. I thank you most cordially for your gift. Charlotte and I miss you ever so much and every day. For both and our love. Ever truly yours" Justin McCarthy (1830-1912), an Irish politician who advocated Home Rule as a Member of the British Parliament (1879-1900), was also a prolific journalist, novelist and historian. His most known works include A Fair Saxon (1873), Dear Lady Disdain (1875) and Miss Misanthrope (1878). He also co-authored three books with Rosa Campbell Praed, including their 1886 novel The Right Honourable. Creased. Left edge worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
