The Irish author sends a handwritten letter to English novelist and
editor James Payn.
Autograph letter signed: "Justin McCarthy", 1 page, 4½x3½.
Chelsea Embankment, London, England, 26 May 1987. To "My Dear James
Payn" novelist, editor of Cornhill Magazine, in full: "Miss
Orleber the lady whom I beg have to introduce to you, has, it seems to me, a
quite remarkable faculty for 'humorous & picturesque illustration. Could you
kindly advise her how to make her gift available? Very truly yours".
Justin McCarthy (1830-1912), an Irish politician who advocated
Home Rule as a Member of the British Parliament (1879-1900), was also a
prolific journalist, novelist and historian. His most known works include
A Fair Saxon (1873), Dear Lady Disdain (1875) and
Miss Misanthrope (1878). He also co-authored three books with
Rosa Campbell Praed, including their 1886 novel The Right
Honourable. James Payn (1830-1898) was an English novelist, editor of
the Cornhill Magazine from 1883 to 1896. His most famous work, Lost
Sir Massingberd was published in Chamber's Journal (where he also was
editor) in 1864. Creased and toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
