He writes a sweet letter to his friend Olga, thanking her for
gifts.
Autograph letter signed: "Justin Huntley McCarthy", 2 pages,
5x8. On the stationery for Shakespeare Hotel, Stratford-on-Avon,
Warwickshire, England. September 3, 1907. To "My Dear Olga" in
full: "I was indeed pleased to get your kind letter which was put into my
hand just as I was entering my box on the first night. It was very sweet of you
to think of writing to me & sending me such friendly wishes & that lucky
piece of shamrock. I thank you most warmly for your welcome sympathy. Your
sincere friend" Justin McCarthy (1830-1912), an Irish politician
who advocated Home Rule as a Member of the British Parliament (1879-1900),
was also a prolific journalist, novelist and historian. His most known works
include A Fair Saxon (1873), Dear Lady Disdain
(1875) and Miss Misanthrope (1878). He also co-authored three
books with Rosa Campbell Praed, including their 1886 novel The Right
Honourable. Creased and toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
