Handwritten on mourning stationery, the Irish author agrees to go on
a trip to aid a friend. Dated in 1888.
Autograph letter signed: "Justin McCarthy", in purple ink, 1
page, 4½x7 black bordered mourning stationery. Chelsea, S.W., England, 14
November 1888. To "Dear Sir", in full: "Yes--I will
certainly go, if we can fix on a convenient date within the next four weeks--or
after January. Thursday & Friday are inconvenient dates for me, but I will
do all I can to meet your wishes. Very truly yours". Justin McCarthy
(1830-1912), an Irish politician who advocated Home Rule as a Member of
the British Parliament (1879-1900), was also a prolific journalist, novelist
and historian. His most known works include A Fair Saxon (1873),
Dear Lady Disdain (1875) and Miss Misanthrope
(1878). He also co-authored three books with Rosa Campbell Praed,
including their 1886 novel The Right Honourable. Creased and toned.
