From his office at the Northern Daily Times, McCarthy solicits
publishers on behalf of the Right and Honorable W.E. Gladstone
Autograph letter signed: "Justin McCarthy", 1 page, 5x8.
Liverpool, England, 29 November 1855. To "Gentlemen" at Parker
& Co. in full: "I beg leave to ask where you would become
publisher and if so, upon what terms of a pamphlet entitled 'Our Colonies',
being an address delivered by the Right and Hon. We. E. Gladstone in Chester,
revised carefully & enlarged by Hon. Gladstone himself. I propose to sell to
the public at 6 per copy, and should you agree to become the publishing the
pamphlet, which is being printed here, will be forwarded to you. I remain,
gentlemen, You obedient servant" Justin McCarthy (1830-1912), an
Irish politician who advocated Home Rule as a Member of the British
Parliament (1879-1900), was also a prolific journalist, novelist and
historian. His most known works include A Fair Saxon (1873),
Dear Lady Disdain (1875) and Miss Misanthrope
(1878). He also co-authored three books with Rosa Campbell Praed,
including their 1886 novel The Right Honourable. McCarthy wrote a
non-critical biography on W.E. Gladstone entitled The Story of Gladstone
(1904). Creased and toned. Left edge worn. Slightly soiled at top margin.
