Autograph letter signed: "Justin Huntley McCarthy", 2 pages
(integral), 4½x7. Westgate on Sea, Kent, England, 23 December 1902. To
"My Dear John" in full: "I have just returned from the south of
France & your letter has reached me here forwarded from J.L.C. New I say
that is would always be a pleasure to me to be of any service for a friend of
yours. Let me know what there is that I can do. I expect to be in Westgate for
the rest of the winter. With warmest thanks for your kind congratulations &
cordial wishes for Christmas & New Year. Always Sincerely" Justin
McCarthy (1830-1912), an Irish politician who advocated Home Rule as a
Member of the British Parliament (1879-1900), was also a prolific
journalist, novelist and historian. His most known works include A Fair
Saxon (1873), Dear Lady Disdain (1875) and Miss
Misanthrope (1878). He also co-authored three books with Rosa
Campbell Praed, including their 1886 novel The Right Honourable.
