Westgate on Sea, Kent, England, 20 March 1902. To "F.G. Kitton,
Esq." in full: "I am much obliged by your letter of the 19th. just
received, and shall be happy to undertake on the terms you mention the
preparation of a critical essay as an introduction to 'The Irish Sketchbook.'
Perhaps you will kindly let me known when the time is more nearly at hand at
which you will require to have my manuscript. Very truly yours.". The
Irish Sketch Book by William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) was
published in 1843. McCarthy's introduction appeared in later publications.Justin McCarthy (1830-1912), an Irish politician who
advocated Home Rule as a Member of the British Parliament (1879-1900), was
also a prolific journalist, novelist and historian. His most known works include
A Fair Saxon (1873), Dear Lady Disdain (1875) and
Miss Misanthrope (1878). He also co-authored three books with
Rosa Campbell Praed, including their 1886 novel The Right
Honourable. Creased and toned. Lightly soiled. Corners and edges worn.
