Typed letter signed: "Justin McCarthy", 1 page, 8½x11.
Westgate on Sea, Kent, England, 31 March 1902 To "F.G. Kitton,
Esq." in full: "Many thanks for your letter of the 28th. I hope to
send the M.S. of the introduction to the 'Irish Sketchbook' in the opening of
next week. You should have it even sooner than this were it not that at present
I am much engaged with some other work. I hope however early next week will be
in good time for your purpose. Very truly yours". The Irish Sketch
Book by William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) was published in 1843.
McCarthy's introduction appeared in later publications.Justin
McCarthy (1830-1912), an Irish politician who advocated Home Rule as a
Member of the British Parliament (1879-1900), was also a prolific
journalist, novelist and historian. His most known works include A Fair
Saxon (1873), Dear Lady Disdain (1875) and Miss
Misanthrope (1878). He also co-authored three books with Rosa
Campbell Praed, including their 1886 novel The Right Honourable.
Creased and toned. Lightly soiled. Corners and edges worn. Otherwise, fine
condition.
