His typed letter from 1902 regarding his introduction to The Irish
Sketch Book by William Makepeace Thackeray
Typed letter signed: "Justin McCarthy", 1 page, 8½x11.
Westgate on Sea, Kent, England, 15 April 1902. To "F.G. Kitton,
Esq." in full: "I enclose the introduction to 'The Irish Sketch
Book.'[not included] I hope that it will reach you in good time and that
it will suit the purposes of your undertaking. The book has a great personal
interest for me partly because I am familiar with the scenery it describes, and
partly because I can well remember some of the men whom Thackeray introduces
into it--and Thackeray himself as well. Very truly yours". The Irish
Sketch Book by William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) was published in
1843. McCarthy's introduction appeared in later publications.Justin McCarthy (1830-1912), an Irish politician who
advocated Home Rule as a Member of the British Parliament (1879-1900), was
also a prolific journalist, novelist and historian. His most known works include
A Fair Saxon (1873), Dear Lady Disdain (1875) and
Miss Misanthrope (1878). He also co-authored three books with
Rosa Campbell Praed, including their 1886 novel The Right
Honourable. Creased and toned. Lightly soiled. Corners and edges worn.
