response to a question posed to him about nuclear proliferation, and signs on his behalf
Typed Letter Signed: “K. Ram” 7¼x9. December 6, 1961. To: “Dear Miss Lena De Rita”
(Handwritten correction at “Rita”) In full: “Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru is very glad to
receive your letter which you have written on behalf of your school. You have enquired what the
Prime Minister think of the Russian explosion of a 50 Megaton bomb. The Prime Minister has
asked me to tell you that he has been much distressed at the nuclear test in the Soviet Union.
How these tests will affect people now or in future [sic], it is for the scientists to determine. They
are, however, of the view that the danger is not so great now, but it is accumulating and may
affect the future. The Prime Minister thinks that it would be disastrous if there is a nuclear war
and our present world would be largely destroyed by it./ 2. The Government's plans for Indian's
future are contained in their Third Five Year Plan./ 3/ The best way to help India is to encourage
her trade, especially her export trade./ Yours sincerely”. K. Ram was the principal private
secretary to Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who ruled India from its independence
from Great Britain in 1947 until his passing in 1964. Nehru was a student of Mahatma
Gandhi and helped shape India into a modern socialist secular republic. Paper clip indentation
along left-hand side of top edge, extending downward. Toned. Several horizontal folds.
Otherwise, fine condition.
