Military appointment signed "Wilhelm/F.R." as King of Prussia. Pencil notations in bottom left corner and on verso of page 1. 1 page, 8½x14, 1 sheet folded, with 3¼-inch diameter embossed seal of right edge of page 3, with 2 binder holes at left edge. March 27, 1909. In German, translated: "We, Wilhelm, By grace of God King of Prussia etc: etc: etc: announce and and let know herewith: After We resolved the Lieutenant Commander Paul Nippe because of his loyal accomplishments, good character and acquired knowledge of the sea and war to nominate and appoint him, so We do such also herewith in power of this Patent in such a way: that We and Our most highly House the very same will be further loyal, graceful, and obedient, Our benefit and best looked for everywhere and convey, adversity and disadvantage with outmost possibility prevent, warn and anticipate, which he is obliged as a Corvette-Captain to do and perform, what is assigned to him by his superiors by occasion has to be done with pertinent loyalty, diligence and eagerness, day and night, at sea and at land, not to be distracted by all current war events, with willing and undistracted giving his limb and life, guts and blood, additionally to behave and show how an obedient servant and war experienced Corvette-Captain is due, as by his oath of obligation is demanded For this We will Our henceforth Corvette Captain Nippe with this rank and all therewith associated prerogative and servitude anytime protect and maintain in grace also with occurring possibility considering further promotion. This is to document that We have signed it personally and embossed with Our seal.". WILHELM was born Friedrich Wilhelm Viktor Albert in Potsdam, Germany in 1859, and succeeded his father as Emperor of Germany and King of Prussia in 1888. His father, Kaiser Frederick III, reigned only 99 days, dying of cancer. Wilhelm was born with a withered left arm that was kept from the public much in the same way as was FDR's polio. As part of the Armistice ending World War I, Kaiser Wilhelm II was forced to abdicate, which he did on November 28, 1918. He went to Holland, where he died in 1941. Lightly toned, soiled, foxed and creased. Signature is lightly smeared but legible. Ink transference from signature. Show-through and ink transference from manuscript, which does not touch signature. Light tears at top and bottom edge and separations along spine. Rounded edges. Light stain on verso. Folded once vertically and five times horizontally and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
