KAREL ANČERL The talented Czech conductor pens his name on this card Signature: “Karl Ančerl/ 3/10/ 1956” 4x2¾. Clipping of a captioned image, b/w, 1½x2, affixed at right. Karel Ančerl (1908-1973) was a conductor known primarily for his performances of the works of Czech composers.  He attended the Prague Conservatory where he learned the craft of conducting from Hermann Scherchen and Václav Talich. Although he survived imprisonment in concentration camps during World War II, he lost his wife and young son. Following the war, he began conducting for Radio Prague, continuing this affiliation until 1950. During this period he also conducted the orchestra of the avant-garde theatre Osvobozené divadlo in Prague (1931-1933).Shortly after leaving Radio Prague, Ančerl began functioning as artistic director of the Czech Philharmonic, and remained in the post for eighteen years. In 1968, Czechoslovakia was invaded and, as a result, Ančerl relocated to Toronto, Canada. He served as music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra until his death in 1973. Foxing throughout, most of which is concentrated at edges. Corners clipped. Paper loss on verso due to a previous mounting. Creasing throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
