KARIM GARCIA
Photograph signed: "Karim Garcia". Color, 8x10. At 19, outfielder
Karim Garcia was the youngest player in the Majors. He played for the
Dodgers (1995-1997), Diamondbacks (1998), Tigers (1999-2000), Orioles (2000,
2004-), Yankees (2002, 2003), Indians (2002-2003) and Mets (2004). In 2003,
Karim Garcia and Yankee teammate Jeff Nelson were charged with assault and
battery for fighting with a groundskeeper in the Fenway Park bullpen during the
9th inning of Game 3 of the 2003 American League Championship Series against the
Boston Red Sox. Boston pitcher Pedro Martinez had earlier thrown a pitch
at Garcia's head and it nicked the batter's shoulder. Garcia later made a hard
slide at Boston second baseman Todd Walker, causing players to come out of the
dugout resulting in Martinez throwing 72-year-old Yankee coach Don Zimmer to the
ground. Just days after the Boston Red Sox won the 2004 World Series, Garcia
and Nelson agreed to perform 50 hours of community service and be evaluated for
possible anger management counseling. If the players complete the requirements,
the assault and battery charges will be dismissed. Fine condition.
