KARL MENNINGER. TLS: "Karl Menninger", 1p, 8½x11. Topeka, Kansas, 1957 March 11. On letterhead of the Menninger Foundation to Mr. Leon Gutterman, Editor and Publisher, Wisdom, Beverly Hills, California. In full: "Thank you for your letter of March 5. We shall look forward to the May issue on psychology. I think this is a fine project and I am pleased that you are planning to quote from THE HUMAN MIND. However, LOVE AGAINST HATE is more modern and I think might be better adapted to this purpose. We are enjoying your WISDOM Awards very much and are displaying them in our staff room for all to see. Sincerely". The Human Mind, the first of Menninger's 14 books, was published in 1930. Written for fellow mental health professionals, the book became a popular success as well. Love Against Hate was published in 1942. Karl Augustus Menninger (1893-1990), the son of psychiatrist Charles Frederick Menninger and brother of psychiatrist William Menninger (the first psychiatrist to be featured on the cover of "Time" magazine), co-founded the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas with his father in 1919. They were joined by William in 1925, the year that the Menninger's had raised enough support to build the Menninger Sanitorium. The Menninger Foundation was founded in 1941 and quickly became a major U.S. psychiatric and psychoanalytic enter. Menninger, who is credited with crusading against the stigma of mental illness and bringing an understanding of psychiatry to the public, largely through his writings, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1981. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Pencil note (unknown hand) at upper right margin. Fine condition.
