of his poem, Elegy for a Dead Soldier
Autograph Quotation signed on a Typed Poem: "Karl Shapiro/All the artist
can do in an/age of violence is to remain an/artist at all costs. That will
give/hope.", 4 pages, 8½x11. Signed at the end of a typed copy of his
12-stanza poem, Elegy for a Dead Soldier. Shapiro published this poem in
1944 while serving in the United States Army Medical Corps. American poet Karl
Shapiro (1913-2000) published his first collection, Poems in 1935, his
last, The Wild Card, in 1998. This poem was written while Shapiro was
serving in the South Pacific with in the US Army Medical Corps during World War
II. The following year, 1945, still in uniform, he won a Pulitzer
Prize for Essay on Rime while serving in the South Pacific.
Although he taught for most of his life, he condemned domination of American
poetry by tradition-bound academics. Termed "the bourgeois poet" by a
hostile critic, he embraced the term, using it as a title for his 1964 book.
Before his death Shapiro completed two volumes of a projected 3-volume
autobiography. Lightly toned. Light corner creases. Two nailhead-sized brown
stains in upper right corner of first page. Otherwise, fine
condition.
