"Too bad I didn't send you this sooner. You had better write direct to
Mr. Puel a little later on, telling him that I had advised you to do so. With
kind regards, Yours sincerely". Kate Josephine Bateman (1842-1917),
the daughter of acting parents, was on stage from early childhood. In 1860, she
earned plaudits in her mother Sidney Frances Beckman's adaptation of
Longfellow's Evangeline. She was soon playing lead romantic roles,
including Shakespeare's Juliet. Her most widely popular performance was her
title role in Leah the Forsaken (1863), which she created in New York and
then took to London. In England she met and married George Crowe in
1866, appearing only intermittently on the stage until her major comeback
in Henry James' The American (1891). In 1892 she founded an acting
school in London. Her last stage appearances was in Euripides' Medea
(1907). One vertical fold. Lightly creased. Lightly frayed at top edge.
