KATHARINE BRUSH
The American author sends letter about her younger brother's accomplishments, signs name black ink
Typed letter signed: "Katharine Brush" in black ink. 1 page, 8½x11. Written on personal letterhead. November 25, 1927. New York City, New York. In full: "Dear Mr. Carson:- I have your letter of November 19th. May I say first that I think your idea for an article on dedications is a perfectly fine one? I've always been interested in them, and I'm sure everybody is, for I hear the more unusual ones discussed on every hand. The "brother with A on his themes and Y on his sweater" to whom my "Little Sins" is dedicated is Travis N. Ingham - my only brother. H is twenty-one years old and a Senior this year at Yale; Class of 1928. The "Y on his sweater" was won in track. He excels in the two-mile and the six-mile, and this year is captain of the Yale Cross Country team. The "A on his themes" is actual. He has a decided literary talent, and expects to try journalism after his graduation. I think he will follow in his sister's footsteps - in face I think he will in a very short time leave her about six miles behind! If you can uses any of this, I'll be very glad to have you do so. My brother and I are the only children of Dr. Charles S. Ingham, headmaster of Dummer Academy, a famous old preparatory school in Massachusetts, founded in 1763 by Lieutenant-Governor Dummer of the Massachusetts Bay Colony...if that face has any news value. Cordially yours". Katharine Brush (1902-1952) was an American author best remembered for her involving narrative style and wit. Instead of going to college, she began her career working as a columnist for the Boston Evening Traveller, eventually moving on to short stories that were published in serial magazines such as College Humor and Cosmopolitan, the best known of which were collected into the book titled Night Club (1929). Her books Young Man of Manhattan and Red-Headed Woman were both made into Hollywood films. Her story "The Birthday Party" is still frequently taught in literature classes and appeared in the 2005 Advanced Placement English Literature Exam. Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases. Toned. Corners rounded. Slightly worn and soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
