In full: "With all best wishes for a big success here tonight and a hope that Guthrie and I may see you soon for luncheon and a ride in the country when ever you can." Stage and screen actress Katharine Cornell (1898-1974), who was known as "The First Lady of the American Theater", won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for Anthony and Cleopatra (1948). She also appeared in a number of feature films, including Stage Door Canteen (1943), and narrated The Unconquered (1954), the story of Helen Keller. Guthrie was Cornell's husband, director GUTHRIE McCLINTIC (1893-1961), to whom she was married from 1921 until his death in 1961. Cornell and McClintic lived primarily in New York and had a home on Martha's Vineyard, but Cornell often traveled in stage productions. Actress GRACE GEORGE (1879-1961) made her Broadway debut in 1900 and enjoyed a long career on The Great White Way, appearing in her last play, The Constant Wife, in 1950. George, who is best known for her role in Kind Lady (1935), also appeared in the feature films Tainted Money (1915) and Johnny Come Lately (1943). Slightly soiled. Chipped at upper right corner.
