FOLLOWING THE DEATH OF HER HUSBAND, THE ACTRESS SENDS THANKS TO A BROADWAY COLUMNIST

KATHARINE CORNELL.
Typed Letter, unsigned, 1p, 5¾x7¼. No place, no date. Form letter on sheet imprinted with her name. At upper margin, Cornell has written: "Dear Radie/What a lovely letter thank you so/much". At lower margin, Cornell has written four illegible words. The letter, in full: "The spontaneous and beautiful outpourings of admiration, affection, and appreciation of Guthrie would have delighted him as much as they have comforted me. Our forty years together were rich in mutual experience, excitement, and wonder, and it makes me very happy that so many feel they have shared some of this with us. Thanks you so much." Guthrie was Cornell's husband, director GUTHRIE McCLINTIC (1893-1961), to whom she was married from 1921 until his death. Cornell and McClintic lived primarily in New York and had a home on Martha's Vineyard, but Cornell often traveled in stage productions. RADIE HARRIS (1904-2001) was a long-time entertainment journalist for the "Hollywood Reporter". She wrote her "Broadway Ballyhoo" column from 1940 to the 1990s. Harris, who was also the talent coordinator for the 1943 film, Stage Door Canteen, received a special citation of merit from the Publicists Guild of America in 1982. She also appeared in a number of feature films, including Stage Door Canteen (1943), and narrated The Unconquered (1954), the story of Helen Keller. Lightly creased with fold, not at signature.
