from the Pennsylvania City Institute Library in black ink
Pamphlet signed: "Katherine Milhous" in black ink. 1 page,
4½x7½. Pamphlet describing the "Horn-blowing Rooster" that adorns the wall of
the new Pennsylvania City Institute Library, which first appeared in Milhous'
book The Egg Tree for which she won the Caldecott Medal. Katherine
Milhous (1894-1977) was an American artist, illustrator and writer.
Best known as the author and illustrator of The Egg Tree for
which she won the 1951 Caldecott Medal for U.S. picture book illustration.
Born into a Pennsylvania Quaker family active in Philadelphia's printing
industry, her work has been exhibited at the 1939 New York World's Fair and the
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. From 1935-1940 she was a supervisor
for the Philadelphia Federal Art Project, a branch of the Works Progress
Administration, creating posters promoting Pennsylvania, hers well-known for
their familiar Pennsylvania Dutch designs into her posters. Toned. Corners
