Autograph Note signed: "To Jane Mendoza/Best wishes/always,/Kathleen Battle" in blue ink, 5x3 card. American opera singer Kathleen Battle was born on August 13, 1948 in Portsmouth, Ohio. She attended the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and earned a Master's Degree in music education. After a few years of teaching she began singing locally, gaining much notoriety, and made her professional debut with the Michigan Opera Theatre in 1975. The next year she would debut at the New York City Opera and in 1977 at the San Francisco Opera and Metropolitan Opera. Battle has continued to dazzle audiences in the U.S. and internationally, performing at famed opera houses like the English National Opera, Vienna State Opera and Deutsche Oper Berlin. A five-time Grammy Award winner, Emmy Awardwinner and winner of the 1985 Laurence Olivier Award for Best performance in a New Opera Production, she was awarded the NAACP Image Award - Hall of Fame Award in 1999.
