KATHLEEN CLIFFORD The actress famed for her male impersonations signs this check for $12.50 Check signed: "Kathleen Clifford" in dark blue ink, 6x2¾. May 9, 1927, as indicated by stamp on verso. Check drawn from the account of Kathleen Clifford at Security & Savings Trust Bank in Long Beach, California. American actress Kathleen Clifford (1887-1962) made her name on vaudeville and the stage (She had 11 performing credits on Broadway between 1902 and 1916, mostly in musicals.) before moving to films in 1917. She was famed for her male impersonations and she was often billed as "The Smartest Chap in Town" - a skill that, for some reason, never made it into her movies. In all, Clifford had 13 movies to her credit between 1917 and 1932, including her screen debut, the serial Who is Number One?, and her sole soundie credit The Bride's Bereavement: or, The Snake in the Grass (1932). She also wrote a book for children, The Enchanted Glen: Never Trod By the Feet of Men, which was published in 1945. Gently creased slightly left of center and at upper right-hand corner. Cancellation holes. Bank stamps on front and verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
