His boxing career reached its highest points when Baer attempted, twice, to win the heavyweight boxing championship from Joe Lewis. However, he never succeeded in winning the championship. Baer made his onscreen debut in the 1937 film Take it From Me. During his acting career, Baer was cast in over thirty-five titles including The Big Sky (1952), Slightly Scarlet (1956), The Bashful Elephant (1962), and the last role of his acting career as Mr. Kratz in the 1966 film Ride Beyond Vengeance.
