KATHRYN CRAVENS
Vintage signed photograph of the first woman accredited as a wartime
radio correspondent. Extremely rare!
Inscribed photograph signed: "To Eddie Sousa/with every kind
wish/Kathryn Cravens/Aug 14, 1950", in green ink. Sepia, 8x10. Kathryn
Cravens (1898-1991), actress, author and news correspondent, began her
career on radio as a performer. She hosted the program, "News Through a
Woman's Eyes" in the 1930s before working for CBS New York, becoming one of
the first women to broadcast coast to coast. She also ran her own news syndicate
that featured stories and poems from her traveling days as the "Flying
Reporter"--a travelling project she started to help prove airlines were safe.
During World War II Cravens became the first woman accredited as a wartime
radio correspondent when she was assigned to Europe, Asia and the Middle
East. Also a radio interview host, she interviewed a wide variety of
American stars, from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Shirley Temple. Toned. Pencil note
(unknown hand) on verso. Corners slightly creased. Otherwise, fine
condition.
