KAY BOYLE
Writing from Germany, she regrets that she can make only a small contribution to the Kenneth Patchen fund.
Autograph Letter signed: "Kay Boyle", 1 page, 6x9. "Germany", no date. In full: "I am sorry that my contribution to the Kenneth Patchen fund must, of necessity, be such a small one. Yours sincerely". American author KAY BOYLE (1902-1992) lived most of her young adult life among avant-garde writers in Europe, returning to the US after World War II. She wrote 40 books, including 14 novels, 8 poetry collections, 11 volumes of short fiction, and many translations and essays. Blacklisting during the McCarthy era took away much of her employment at The New Yorker and other US periodicals. Boyle was politically active for civil rights, and against nuclear weapons and the war in Vietnam. She won two O. Henry Awards for short fiction, two Guggenheim Fellowships, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Endowment for the Arts. Kenneth Patchen (1911-1972) was an avant-garde American writer with a political orientation similar to Boyle's. Spinal injuries involved Patchen in many operations from 1937 until the end of his life, the probably reason for the fund mentioned in Boyle's letter. Left edge creased and worn. Normal mailing folds. Paper clip stain on top margin. Light surface creases. Toned. Corners slightly worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
