KAY HAMMOND and JOHN CLEMENTS
Signature of husband and wife in blue ink on an album leaf
Signatures: "Kay Hammond", "John Clements", 6¼x5¼. KAY HAMMOND was the stage
name of English actress Kay Hammond Standing (1909-1980), who may be best remembered
for her role as Elvira in Noel Coward's play Blithe Spirit, which she filled in the 1941 play
and the 1945 movie. She played Princess Katherine in the 1953 film version of Henry V. Her
first film was Children of Chance (1930), her last Five Golden Hours (1961). She is
sometimes confused with American screen actress Kay Hammond (1901-1982). JOHN
CLEMENTS (1910-1988) was an English actor and producer. He appeared in over 200 plays
on London stages, and founded the Intimate Theatre in 1935. His starring film roles included
The Four Feathers (1939) and several films of World War II. He starred opposite Kay
Hammond in a London revival of Coward's Private Lives (1945), and married
Hammond the following year. He was artistic director of the Chichester Film Festival
(1966-1973). Right edge ragged from previous binding. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine
condition.
