KAY STARR, RED EGNER, and HANK PENNY
Original art piece drawn and signed by the jazz singer, showing a 'K' in the middle of a
star, an allusion to her own name. Also signed by musician Red Egner, Western swing
pioneer Hank Penny, and his wife, "Mrs. Hank Penny". Extremely rare!
Original art signed: "Me too![drawing of a star with a 'K' in it]/Kay Starr", "Red Egner", "Hank
Penny/12/19/49", "Mrs. Hank Penny", 7¾x10. Egner's note: "Best of Everything to a Swell
Guy and a friend Thanks for the plugs". Penny's note: "It's a pleasure to guest with a nice
personality like you…George Sanders!! Sincerely". Mrs. Penny's note: "Good Luck to you,
George - Sincerely". American jazz singer KAY STARR (1922-2016) began her career at age 7
on the radio in Dallas- at 10 she made $3 a day on her own 15 minute program! At 15 she
had her fist contract band contract - Joe Venuti Orchestra and then Bob Crosby and Glenn
Miller with whom she made her first recording. Becoming a soloist in 1946, she had her first
top 10 in 1949 with "So Tired", "Hoop-de-Doo" in 1950, and "Wheel of Fortune" made
No. 1 in 1952. Her only other No. 1 was "The Rock and Roll Waltz" in 1955. Starr
continued to tour and record into the 1970s. RED EGNER was a country musician of the
1940's and 1950's, releasing singles like "I'm a Fool to Care", "Brown Eyed Baby", and "Hide
Your Tears". HANK PENNY (1918-1992) was a pioneer of "Western Swing" which
influenced both rock and roll and jazz. A banjo player, Penny fronted several bands but was
better known for his singles like "Steel Guitar Stomp", "Get Yourself a Red Head", and
"Bloodshot Eyes". "Bloodshot Eyes" was covered by singer Wynonie Harris in 1951,
becoming a major rock and roll hit and directly influencing legend Elvis Presley. In the mid
1950's, Hank Penny moved to Las Vegas and was a regular performer at the Golden Nugget.
It is unclear who this Mrs. Hank Penny was - Penny was married five times, but it is not Sue
Thompson and Shari Penny, as he was not married to either until after 1953. George R.
Sanders, originally a disc jockey, became a prominent radio/TV interview host, first in Los
Angeles and later in Portland. Toned on several areas of sheet. Corners lightly worn. Light
surface creases. Left edge torn and frayed. Lightly toned on outer edges. Otherwise, fine
condition.
