KEENE CURTIS
The Tony- and Obie-winning actor sends Christmas greetings to Theatre World editor John A. Willis.
Christmas Card signed: "Merry/Christmas/Love/Keene", 4¼x3 folded, 8¼x3 open flat card. Addressed in Keene's hand on front of card to "Jack" [John Willis]. Printed image of a morning glory on front of card. American character actor KEENE CURTIS (1923-2002) had some of his greatest successes on stage, winning a Tony as Best Featured Actor in a Musical for The Rothschilds (1970) and scoring an Obie nomination for The Cocktail Hour (1988). He made a few feature films, including American Hot Wax and Heaven Can Wait, but his most frequent presence was as a TV guest star, often a recurring visitor. He appeared as John Allen Hall in 15 episodes of Cheers (1990-1993). Curtis was also a frequent voice over in animated series, including Lord Balthazar in The Smurfs (1981-1989). John A. Willis (1916-2010) was a founder (with Daniel Blum) of Theatre World (1945), America's oldest annual record of Broadway, Off-Broadway and regional theatre, referenced by industry professionals, historians, students and theatre fans worldwide. The publication bestowed the prestigious Theatre World Awards for outstanding Broadway and Off-Broadway debuts. Willis, chief editor from 1965 to 2008, is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing the Theatre World Awards shows, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Corners lightly worn. Lightly toned. Pencil note (unknown hand) below signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
