Signature: "Kenneth Patchen/ 'The Water Gypsy'/ Barstow Boathouse/ Whitestone,
Long Island". 2x4½. "The Water Gypsy" was the name of his boat. Kenneth
Patchen (1911-1972) was an artist who worked in various mediums to
produce fantastical poetry. Although his work achieved a cult following, his
pacifist view in regards to the United States' involvement in WWII and his poor
health are believed to have dampened his popularity. He published his first
collection of poems, Before the Brave, in 1936. Many of his poems included
pictures, paintings, and music.Toned. Note on verso in unknown hand. Irregular
cut. Torn cleanly along bottom edge. Minor tears, stains, and smudges
throughout (still legible).
