KENSUKE HORINOUCHI
Newly appointed Japan's Ambassador to the US (1939), he confirms a
dinner party invitation
Typed Letter signed: "Kensuke Horinouchi", 1 page, 8x10½.
Washington, D.C., 1939 April 13. On letterhead of the Japanese Embassy to
Martin Taylor, Wall Street, New York City. In full: "I have received
your letter of April 11 enclosing Dr. Masujima's letter of introduction. I am
glad to know that Mrs. Taylor and you are coming to dinner on Tuesday, at April
16th at 8:15 o'clock. Mrs. Horinouchi and I are looking forward to meeting you
then." Kensuke Horinouchi, a polished career diplomat with previous service
in the US and Europe, was Japan's Ambassador to the US (1939-1940). Unable to
persuade the US to rescind the economic sanctions it had imposed on export of
strategic materials to Japan, and viewed by the military-dominated government at
home of being too conciliatory to the US, he was recalled in April 1940.
Kept under virtual house arrest during World War II, Horinouchi re-emerged
as an important Foreign Ministry official after Japan's surrender, heading the
first delegation to re-visit the US and serving as Ambassador to the Nationalist
Chinese government on Taiwan. Toned. Two filing holes at left edge. One vertical
one horizontal fold creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
