KENT TAYLOR
Vintage studio photo, inscribed in person to collector Saul
Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To/Saul/Best in life/Kent
Taylor". B/w, 8x10. Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature: February
14, 1938. Kent Taylor (1907-1987) was a leading man in B-movies of the
1930s and forties, including a notable turn as Doc Holiday in Tombstone: the
Town Too Tough to Die (1942). He had the rugged good lucks of the top male
stars, but apparently lacked the charisma or good fortune to reach the very top.
He may be best known for playing the title role in the TV series Boston
Blackie (1951-1953). Taylor, who also appeared in the TV series The
Rough Riders (1958-1959), guest starred on several TV series, from The
Ford Television Theatre (1956) to several episodes of Zorro (1958)
and Land of the Giants (1970). Near the end of his career, Taylor
descended to low-grade horror movies like Brides of Blood and Hell's
Bloody Devils. An in-law of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel, Taylor was
half of the inspiration for the name of Superman's alter ego, Clark Kent
(Clark came from Clark Gable). Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York
business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making
friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album
leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign
in fountain pen. Corners worn and creased. Lightly toned around edges. Ink
note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, Fine condition.
