KIM HUNTER
The actress signed her name on this contract with the Society of the Theatre
of Long Island
Document signed: "Kim Hunter", and "KH". 2p, 8½x14. Mineola, New York,
April 1, 1968. Signed on page 1, initialed on page 2. Hunter added her New
York City address and phone number. She signed this contract with the Society
of the Theatre of Long Island, Inc. to appear as Alma in the play Eccentricities of
a Nightingale at the Mineola Theatre, beginning April 23, at a wage of $1,850
per week. Kim Hunter (1922-2002), born Janet Cole in Detroit, Michigan,
made her film debut in 1943 in The Seventh Victim. Four years later, she
created the role of Stella Kowalski in the Broadway production of Tennessee
Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire. Hunter reprised the role in the 1951 film
version, winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Blacklisted during the
McCarthy era, she was later the star witness in a trial that discredited the charges,
paving the way for dozens of other performers to return to their careers. In one
of her first roles as McCarthyism dissolved, she co-starred in the television
play Requiem for a Heavyweight, part of Rod Serling's Playhouse 90 series.
This particular episode of the series received multiple Emmy Awards and a
Peabody Award. It was later turned into a feature-length film. Later in her career,
Hunter concentrated largely on stage and television work, but also starred in the
original Planet of the Apes films (1968, 1970, 1971). Staple holes in bottom
and left margins. ¾x¼-inch piece missing from upper right corner. Otherwise,
fine condition.
