KING CHARLES II. Manuscript DS: "Charles R" as King of England, 1p, 7½x11½. Court at Whitehall, 1678 May 25. In Olde English. Ordering a commission to be issued appointing Roger Meredith Secretary of our Embassy to the States General of the United Provinces (the Netherlands). Fourteen years earlier, in 1664, King Charles II took from the Dutch, New Netherland which included the settlement of New Amsterdam. He renamed both "New York" in honor of his brother, the Duke of York, who succeeded him in 1685 as King James II. The assembly of the United Provinces of the Netherlands was the States-General, which had the power of making peace and war and all foreign alliances. On November 4, 1677, just 6½ months after King Charles II signed this document, his niece Mary married her cousin, Prince William of Orange. King Charles II died in 1685. His successor, King James II, was deposed in 1688 and succeeded by his son-in-law William and daughter Mary. Folds, not at signature. Lightly creased. Lightly soiled.
