KING EDWARD VII
King Edward VII signs an envelope.
Autograph Envelope signed: "A.E." [Albert Edward] as Prince
of Wales, 4¾x3, affixed to 11x9½ sheet. Royal seal, possibly from back flap,
affixed at upper portion. Addressed by Prince Albert to: "Miss
Cadogan/104. Piccadilly". Typed caption beneath envelope. Newspaper article
from the August 19, 1979 issue of "The Sunday Telegraph" affixed beneath
envelope. Titled: "Ugly Ducking into Swan-King". Subtitled:
"Edward VII: A Portrait". Ink notes (unknown hand) beneath article. Imprinted
information on the Cadogans has been affixed at upper right of the sheet. A
question mark has been written next to one of the names, likely in an attempt to
determine the possible recipient. King Edward VII (1841-1910), the eldest son
of Queen Victoria, was 59 when his mother died and he ascended to the throne.
During his short reign (1901-1910), he promoted international amity by
visiting European capitals, preparing the way for treaties of arbitration.
Albert, despite being Hanoverian, took the family name of his father, Prince
Consort Albert. His appearance as a witness in a divorce suit in 1870 resulted
in a scandal (he was 29 and had been married to Princess Alexandra of Denmark
since 1863) and his exclusion from the government by his mother, the Queen.
Envelope is lightly creased, heavily soiled (all writing legible). 1-inch
diagonal tear through seal (paper intact). Mounting sheet is lightly creased. 3
file holes at blank right margin, light stains at upper and lower file holes.
Chipped at blank right edge. Collector's name written in ink at upper right
margin. Overall, fine condition.
