Signatures: "Wallis Windsor" and "Edward/Duke of Windsor", 3¾x6 Waldorf-Astoria memorandum paper. On January 20, 1936, the Prince of Wales became King Edward VIII when his father, King George V, died. He abdicated on December 11, 1936, to marry an American divorcée, Wallis Warfield Simpson. His brother became King George VI and bestowed upon the abdicated King the title Duke of Windsor. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor were married in 1937. The Duke and Duchess had a suite at the Waldorf-Astoria for use during their visits to New York, although they resided most of the time in France. Lightly creased.
