In 1930, Edward, Prince of Wales, known for having a number of affairs, met and fell in love with a married American woman, Mrs. Wallis Simpson. After he succeeded his father, King George V, on January 20, 1936, concern about his private life grew in the Cabinet, especially over his association with Mrs. Simpson. Her status as a then two-time American divorcée was unacceptable as potential Queen material. On December 10, 1936, KING EDWARD VIII (1894-1972) executed an Instrument of Abdication that was given legal effect the following day. He was never crowned, his reign lasted 325 days. In 1937, Edward, created Duke of Windsor by his brother who became King George VI, married Wallis Simpson. Edward and WALLIS, DUCHESS OF WINDSOR (1896-1986), settled in France and were married for 35 years. In 1942, ten-year-old London-born ELIZABETH TAYLOR (1932-2011)made her screen debut in Universal's There's One Born Every Minute. Universal let her contract drop after the one film. In 1943, she was signed by M-G-M to a long-term contract tbat lasted into the 1960s. Taylor was nominated for five Academy Awards for Best Actress, the first four for M-G-M: Raintree Country (1958), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1959), Suddenly, Last Summer (1960) and BUtterfield 8 (1961) and, for Warner Bros., Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1967). She won Best Actress Oscars in 1961 and 1967. A Broadway actor from 1927 and film performer from 1933, CESAR ROMERO (1907-1994) often played comic second leads. He said that his favorite movie role was that of Cortez in The Captain from Castille (1947). His TV roles included The Joker on Batman (1966-1968) and Peter Stavros, who married Jane Wyman's Angela Channing on Falcon Crest (1985-1988). Numerous stamps and ink notes (unknown hands).
