KING EDWARD VIII (DUKE OF WINDSOR)
Postcard photo, shown as Prince of Wales but signed as Duke of Windsor, framed with a plaque in the Gallery of History style to 14x23
Postcard Photograph signed: "Edward Duke of Windsor". B/w with brown hue, 3¼x4¼. British postcard photograph by W. & D. Downey, London, S.W. Part of the 500 C Rotary Series. This photograph was possibly taken at or shortly after Edward's investure as Prince of Wales in 1911. Captioned at lower margin: "H.R.H. The Prince of Wales". Edward, Duke of Windsor (1894-1972), signed this boyhood photo after December 10, 1936 when he abdicated the throne in order to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee (the couple was married in 1937). Edward was the Prince of Wales from 1911 until his ascendancy to the throne on January 20, 1936. Upon his abdication, the crown went to his brother, George VI, who bestowed the title of Duke of Windsor upon Edward two days later. The Duke later served as Governor of the Bahamas from 1940-1945. Diagonal crease at upper right background, else fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 14¼x23.
