Signed document setting up a British lieutenant's "halfpay" in 1732
Documentsigned "George R." 2 pages (1 sheet front and verso),
12 ½ x 7 ¾. May 18, 1732. This document set up Lt. John Herbert of the
king's Independent Company of Foot in Jamaica for "halfpay" of two shillings and
sixpence a day, provided he didn't work for anyone else. Halfpay is the British
army term for a soldier's reduced pay when he isn't in service or retired. The
second in the Hannoverian line of British monarchs, George II (1683-1760)
was king of Great Britain and elector of Hanover from 1727 to 1760. He
was the last British king to command troops in the field, a victory over
the French at Dettingen in 1743. George II's reign did much to consolidate
the practice of constitutional monarchy: a king deferring to a Cabinet
responsible to Parliament. He also presided over victories against France in
India and North America, and also the defeat at Culloden (1745) of the last
Jacobite rebellion (on behalf of the former Stuart rulers). Lightly toned and
creased. Page has been folded many times and unfolded. Tears along edges, mostly
along edges. Part of page has been torn away in upper right corner. Otherwise in
fine condition.
