It includes George's Privy Purse cash account for August of 1758 and a list of expenses from the previous month, including salaries for postage and for secretaries, clerks and other officials, as well as £2,000 for the king's expenses. This is a unique look inside the expenses of the United Kingdom's monarchy. The second in the Hanoverian line of British monarchs, George II (1683-1760, born in Herrenhausen Palace, Hanover, Germany) was king of Great Britain and elector of Hanover from 1727 to 1760. He was the last British king to command troops in the field, a victory over the French at Dettingen in 1743. George II's reign did much to consolidate the practice of constitutional monarchy: a king deferring to a Cabinet responsible to Parliament. He also presided over victories against France in India and North America, and also the defeat at Culloden (1745) of the last Jacobite rebellion (on behalf of the former Stuart rulers). Lightly toned, foxed, soiled and creased. Show-through from both sides touches manuscript writing but not signatures. Discolored at top and bottom edges. Rounded corners. Neatly torn from account book along left edge. Folded thrice and unfolded. Nicked at right edge along folds. Otherwise in fine condition.
